INCENSE VS. SCENTED CANDLES: WHICH IS THE MORE SUSTAINABLE OPTION?
WE DIVE IN TO SEE WHICH IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Candles and incense are beautiful ways to contribute to the ambiance of a space. Whether it be a special occasion or a just a cozy night in, lighting a scented candle or burning some incense can bring peace and sweet smelling aroma to the air. But, are scented candles and fragrant incenses good for the environment? We found out.
Candles
Most affordable candles that are found in large department stores and drug stores are made with paraffin wax. They emit harmful byproducts and greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide). These types of candles are made of petroleum (which is created via nonrenewable energy sources). Scented paraffin candles are even more damaging as the fragrances can release additional toxins into the air when burned.
When buying candles, soy and beeswax candles are your best options. They are made from natural sources, and are less likely to emit toxic and harmful chemicals. It is also important to be careful that the candle wick is free of lead and zinc as they can release harmful chemicals as they burn.
Incense
Both candles and incense contribute to indoor air quality problems. The smoke, soot and particle matter released from burning incense is said by some to rival that of cigarette smoke. If lighting incense, make sure it burns in a well ventilated area and try to purchase organic, natural incense only.
The best alternative to scented candles and incense is a diffuser filled with pure, organic, essential scented oil. Diffusers contribute calming fragrance to the room without smoke and also have many health benefits.
