The start of the new year is, inevitably, all about resolutions. More working out, less carbs and sugar, less phones and more face to face contact. We’re jumping on the bandwagon and dedicating 2020 to a less is more approach in the name of all that is natural and sustainable.
BUY LESS STUFF, MORE QUALITY
LESS IS MORE is all about making thoughtful and conscious choices, buying less fast fashion and investing in more sustainable pieces than will endure. This year, we encourage you to buy better and buy less.
TAKE OUT LESS, COOK MORE
Take out comes with a lot of waste; an excess of paper napkins, plastic utensils, and plastic bags. Additionally, the fumes from delivery drives, the wasted food, and the poor quality ingredients are no win. So take time to stop buy your local farmers market, invest in seasonal and quality fruits and vegetables, and spend the evening cooking up something wholesome and delicious.
DRIVE LESS, WALK MORE
Reducing your carbon footprint, cutting down on emissions and pollution comes hand in hand with upping your step count and keeping your endorphins up. And if you can’t walk, carpool or take public transportation to take a step in the green direction.
STREAM LESS, READ MORE
Ok this one isn’t necessarily an environmental endeavor, but we always think it is good to put our minds in the books. It seems there are more streaming services than ever but in a world of constant stimulation it is nice to escape into a good novel. We’re including a couple of our favorites from 2019 below.
USE LESS DISPOSABLES, MORE REUSABLES
Plastic lunch baggies and water bottles, cotton makeup pads, and paper napkins are so 2019. For 2020, we’re investing in to-go mugs, reusable water bottles, and stainless steel straws.
INVEST IN MORE NATURAL BEAUTY
While we don’t want to encourage you to throw out all your not so natural products (that would be wasteful!), take inventory of what you have and make sure any new products you buy are free of chemicals, not tested on animals, and made mostly of natural and/or organic ingredients. Tata Harper, RMS, Noble Pancea, and Herbivore are great brands to start with on your natural beauty journey.
EAT MORE VEGGIES, LESS MEAT
If everyone became vegan tomorrow, between 14.5 to 15.6 per cent of human-made global greenhouse gas emissions would be wiped out. While we don’t recommend everyone go vegan, just reducing the amount of red meat you consume will help you do your part to fight climate change.
DONATE MORE, THROW AWAY LESS
Fast fashion contributes to a lot of the waste that ends up un-recycled and in landfills. When you do your spring cleaning and generate some piles of over-worn or never worn garments put them aside to donate to your local goodwill or thrift store. Here are some of our favorite recommendations on where to donate.
USE MORE NATURAL PRODUCTS
Many of the cleaning products you use for your home are laden with chemicals that are not only toxic to the environment but also to you. Read ingredients, go for natural options or even try making your own.
GIVE BACK
Plant a tree for every flight you take this year to offset your carbon footprint, donate your time at your local soup kitchen or with an organization you’ve long admired, give away your old clothes to a homeless shelter. Spend more time giving to those less fortunate.
